Question for Absalom

Postby Steegon on Fri Feb 03, 2012 7:52 am

Hi Absalom, I have a few questions for you. I have it in my head to become my guilds main pally tank, and I was wondering if you could give me some advice on key bindings and macros I should use? Also ui setup and addons that are not the usual raiding ones. I've been away from the game for awhile and have never really raided with my pally before and when I did I was a healer, so any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time

Oh yea, and I was also wondering if you took your name from the Rush song? Because if you did you would be an even greater hero.

Hi Censor,

Thanks for writing in! I'll try and keep things relatively succinct.

Macros.

I have never been a fan of macros that bundle multiple abilities into one as I find you lose too much flexibility and, especially as a tank, you need to be able to react to changing fight dynamics moreso than most. For example, there are pallies who bake in holy shield to most abilities so that it has maximum uptime. While this may, in some cases, be the most beneficial use of holy shield for one fight, it may be suboptimal for others where there are predictable moments of greater than normal physical damage (post-stomp Morchok immediately comes to mind).

Targetting macros can be useful; however, it's the sort of thing that we determine on a case-by-case basis. Rigg and I used targetting macros on both the Dreadblade and Slayer adds on Gunship as it allowed us to target, taunt, and threat them the instant they became targettable while flying in on their drakes.

Keybinds.

I'm always hesitant to say someone should be using so-and-so keybind for X ability because keybinds are an extremely personal thing. They are so dependant on how you are used to playing and what works for you. Broadly, I'd say that you want to identify your game-changing abilities (this can range from taunts to raid and personal CDs) and you want to make sure they are sufficiently accessible so you can access them in a clutch moment but not too accessible that you end up fat-fingering them frequently.

Otherwise, the best advice I can give is practice, practice, practice: run 5-mans, run legacy raids, run random BGs as prot -- tank everything you can and figure out what works for you and what doesn't. If you find you're not using an ability when you could have because of what it's bound to, experiment with something different.

UI.

The most important mods I use would probably be a nameplate mod that displays threat (I still use Aloft, although I know many people use Tidy/ThreatPlates), a good bar mod to show the abilities you have available to you (Bartender) and the amount of time left on CD (OmniCC), powerauras and/or a flexible buff-debuff display system (I love Satrina Buff Frames!), and obviously a frequently updated bossmod (Blood Legion uses BigWigs as our mod of choice).

Those of us who raided Firelands live at Blizzcon were required to run on Blizzard's stock machines with default UI. Aloft, Powerauras, and Bossmods (we used DXE back then) were probably the three things I missed the most.

My name.

I'm familiar with where the name Absalom appears in music and literature, and obviously its Biblical origin. When I rolled my toon on a whim, without thinking I would play the game seriously, I had a pile of Faulkner novels lying in my room and one of those novels was "Absalom, Absalom!" I've always been a fan of Faulkner and his style of writing (I count Cormac McCarthy's early novels in a similar vein), and the name kind of stuck.

Ironically, from what I understand, Rush was inspired in the same way (by Faulkner) for "Distant Early Warning," but I'm unfortunately by no means very knowledgeable about the band -- although I have had the fortune to cook food for Geddy Lee many years ago and have escorted Neil Peart to and from a televised interview.

Good luck in your quest to be a prot paladin! I hope you enjoy protection as much as I have these past few years.
